From Beginning to End this is a Great Game!
By Cody Carlson
Stop me if you've heard this before, but Fantasy Flight Games has done it again. "Eldritch Horror" takes all the things you loved about "Arkham Horror," streamlines them, adds some cool, intuitive new rules, widens the scope, and significantly condenses playing time. This game also reminds me quite a bit of Flying Frog Production's "Fortune & Glory." I don't know if I'll play F&G ever again.

At its heart, "Eldritch Horror" is a story telling game. Players search the globe for clues in order to solve mysteries that will prevent an Elder God from coming back to Earth to destroy humanity. In each location they visit they encounter ghouls or smaller mysteries, usually requiring them to roll dice equal to their specific skill set. Characters also are given the ability to enhance their skills by visiting certain locations. One of my favorite aspects of the game is how when your character dies, you are not eliminated, you simply select a new character to play. Your original character does not just disappear however- he becomes an encounter and your new character or someone else may attempt to gain their fallen comrade's clues and assets. It's really a cool mechanic that I haven't seen before, and adds to the thrilling, grand narrative.

If you like grand adventure games and enjoy a fun, horror theme, you really need to get your hands on "Eldritch Horror." I'm already jazzed thinking about what future expansions will bring to this wonderful game!

Another FFG Hit!
By B. Schenck
Eldritch Horror is from Fantasy Flight Games, who brought both Arkham Horror and Elder Sign to the board game world. As with the other two games, Eldritch Horror pulls from themes in the Cthuhlu mythos to provide a cooperative experience for 1-8 players. The basic theme of the game is a race around the world to acquire clues and solve mysteries in order to prevent the end of humanity by one of four ancient evils. Each player takes the role of an investigator (each with unique abilities) whom will investigate various cities and locations to discover some information, then proceed to solve the mystery of the ancient evil in order to banish it. Along the way, the players may have to handle various impediments, such a defeating monsters, closing portals, or preventing other catastrophes. As a result, players will have to work together to handle these issues at the same time focusing on banishing the ancient evil.

The game plays very smoothly, and anyone who has played either Arkham Horror or Elder Sign will have at least a familiarity with the mechanics of the game. Players will general roll a set of D6s to complete some task, with any results of 5 or 6 counting as a "success" on the roll. Each task makes use of different stats that are unique to each character (and may be improved), whether trying to bribe someone or to fight some monster. A successful roll will have some kind of "positive" result (though there might be consequences to the success), whereas a failed roll will almost always result in some kind of "detrimental" result. The actual game play lasts about 2-3 hours depending on how the players approach the game. (Expect about a half hour or so of "learning curve" the first time in.)

The pieces of the game itself are very high quality. The game board is a map of the world, with different locations, cities, and either rail lines or sea lanes connecting the locations. The map has a very 1920s feel to it, and is definitely a very nice backdrop for the game. There are multiple sets of cards for various aspects of the game, all of which are very well done and have excellent pictures on the card backs with well formatted and legible text on the fronts. (Someone purchasing this game may want to consider looking into card holders for the various "decks" used by the game.) The tokens used to represent certain in-game components are very nicely done as well.

Overall, this is a game for anyone who is a fan of the genre, loves board games, and appreciates the work put into Fantasy Flight Games!

Great!
By Cpt. Roboto
I'll keep this short. If you are a fan of Arkham, get this. If you've never played Arkham, get this. It's stream lined Arkham. The instructions (compared to Arkham) are fantastic. You get a quick (16 pages) rule book and also a reference book to bring to the table. During our first play through the reference book was a great asset (especially when rolling for assets:).
Overall the game is great fun. It is Arkham on a global scale yet more manageable and easier to jump into. Also, the theme still holds up. And as always, Fantasy Flight components are top notch.
Only word of warning: it comes with only four Ancient Ones. I'm assuming, like Arkham, there are many expansions forthcoming.
